Comment on Elder Graham: “Why I Support La Sierra University” by Ron Stone M.D.

Sean, Regarding your comments on how LSU thinks this will just “blow over” Ervin Taylor, on his AT blog months ago, predicted this website was on its death bed. We see how accurate Erv is in his futuristic prognostications!

Elder Graham: “Why I Support La Sierra University”

It is now time for the General Conference to do what the Michigan Conference has done. If La Sierra will not come into harmony with the plain teachings of God’s word, then the GC should declare that the school is not fit for a Seventh-day Adventist student to attend. This will get action. Enough is enough!

Enough is enough all right, but Graham and his Board have done absolutely NOTHING over the past year to indicate they have any intention of doing anything about this problem. Therefore, I agree that somebody or some other denominational group must step up to the plate.

Will they? I have my doubts!

Elder Graham: “Why I Support La Sierra University”

I am disappointed in Elder Graham.I come away understanding that, although he believes the truth, it isn’t important enough to insist that it be upheld in our schools and universities–without delay!

Exactly Bettie, Graham tries to isolate himself and his Board, as if he and they “don’t know nothin'” about what has been going on. As I’ve stated before, he SHOULD have known! That was his job and the job of the Board as well as Graham’s staff.

Elder Graham: “Why I Support La Sierra University”

I take issue with Elder Graham’s statement from the outset:
The whole first paragraph is riddled with omissions [indicated by square brackets] that appear designed to misrepresent what has actually happened. Is Elder Graham truly ignorant of the fact that this issue has been ongoing for decades? If he were, he should have made a better effort to inform himself before going public. “It” did not “start” with the assertion of “a” biology student. This looks like an altogether too transparent effort to minimize the problem and assure his constituents that there really is nothing wrong at LaSierra, and that it is the finest Adventist university anywhere.

Graham is not “ignorant” of anything. He simply has not done his duty as Chair of the Board and President of the PUC. He is a major part of the problem we have at LSU. He will continue to deny any responsibility, however, as we will see.

My Goal for La Sierra University

The reason the LaSierra situation has gone uncorrected so long is that most of our administrators have exactly the sort of political instincts that Dan Jackson has. They are politicians and consensus builders; they want to keep the peace and make the trains run on time. But the circumstances call for men of principle, hard men who are willing to stand for the right “though the heavens fall,” i.e., regardless who is offended and loudly complains.

Dave, I agree with you. Jackson’s trying to play on “both teams” is not going to go well for him.

Unfortunately, politics is the “SOP” of many of our SDA officials, Jackson being just one. “Political instincts” are the rule, instead of actually doing what is “right” according to what we know in God’s Word.

Shane Hilde: Think big fish: LSU or the Seventh-day Adventist Church.Graham might not have followed procedure with these men, but I don’t know what the procedure is. I’ve read what the process is in the faculty handbook, but I don’t know if that applies to administrative positions which are at will employees. If it does apply to them, then it appears the process was not followed.

Trustees book says, in 6,9,F, that the Trustes may “discontinue” virtually anyone working at the university.

Does that mean to “fire” or to “force their resignation? Seems like it does.

My Goal for La Sierra University

GMF: If what has been reported about Jackson is correct it is very troubling. Also, one can only wonder why he was selected as the NAD President.I’ve seen a thing or two which made me wonder about Jackson but this report, if true, has to be the worst. May the Good Lord help us!

Jackson was selected to replace Don Schneider, who was also very “passive” in his approach to this problem.

Besides telling Wisbey to “love Jesus” Jackson did virtually nothing.

Sean, Great summary and analysis of the current situation. Another good review of this matter is in the Jan-March 2011 Elders Journal. It also goes into the 2004 evaluation and recommendations, as you have quoted.

How about a “class action” suit against anyone and everyone who has heard the tape or has heard OF the tape?
