Comment on Record enrollment for LSU by Adventist in High School.

@Shane Hilde:

Yes, it’s a novel concept for LSU because they don’t even promote church doctrine, at least not in regard to origins.

As I stated in my post:

students do not want to go to a school that simply promotes church doctrine

Which is why La Sierra has seen it’s enrollment go up. I saw that play out with the senior class last year and it’s playing out again this year. My school had never seen that many students go to La Sierra as they have this year.

Educate Truth has been pushing for, at the very least, to have a variety of views presented in the biology department. Of course it would be preferable that LSU fall on the side of creation, but since they don’t it would be good of them to at least present evidence from both sides.

La Sierra has already stated that it’s position falls on the side of creation. However, as even one of your scientists at the Geological Research Institute admitted, you can’t argue that from a scientific perspective, only from a theological perspective. It’s hard to present scientific evidence that does not exist.

I challenge anyone to show me a biology class at LSU that presents the evidence from the opposing side. If LSU could do that, it would be one giant leap in the right direction.

…and I challenge anyone to show me from a credible peer reviewed scientific journal evidence for young earth creationism.

I’m hoping I won’t get mobbed like I did the last time I did here..

Record enrollment for LSU
@Shane Hilde:

However, you jump to an unsupported conclusion as to the reason for LSU’s jump in enrollment. I could just as easily assert that the jump is a result of LSU attracting more like minded students in regard to origins

Alright, fair enough. My reason for making that conclusion is the fact that I know a fair number, say 20 or so, of the the students that are a part of that “record freshman class” and I know that La Sierra’s status as a progressive Adventist University evidenced by the fact that they teach about evolution played a large part of their thinking. So yes, my sample is about 5% of the class.

credible peer reviewed scientific journal

Perhaps I should have defined that better. When I say credible, I mean it is accepted and used by the scientific community at large. Unlike the answers research journal which had authors go under a pseudonym. My challenge still stands, I would like to see one evidence from a credible/mainstream scientific journal for young earth creationism.

Record enrollment for LSU
@JImmy: Jimmy, it really isn’t worth it to argue with them here, I’ve tried previously. The fact is that us students do not want to go to a school that simply promotes church doctrine, we want a school that supports church doctrine while having a wide variety of view points within it’s faculty. Evidently that’s a novel concept.

LSU Board says ‘we apologize’
@Angelina:

With all due respect, true scientists remain objective until they have exhausted and considered ALL angles, including thoroughly considering Creationism.

That would be nice if creationism was science. Perhaps you should read The Greatest Show on Earth by Richard Dawkins. My friends and I read it at Academy together. Asking a Scientist to prove that evolution is true is akin to denying that Latin ever existed to a Spanish teacher. A quite ridiculous proposition. Thus, all scientific angles should be considered, and when I say science, I mean, mainstream peer-reviewed science.

…ridiculed students if they dared bring it up. Interesting…. Who has been the bully exactly?

Those are unsubstantiated accusations. What we had was a largely orchestrated campaign of character assassination against professors at La Sierra by the extreme right-wing element in the church, the equivalent of the Tea Party in modern day politics.

Like I said, falling to these ridiculous attacks will do little to help La Sierra. I know quite a few of my friends and I plan to attend non-Adventist colleges as a result of these concerns.

LSU Board says ‘we apologize’
@Angelina:

Keeping these professors because there may not be others would be a testament to our lack of faith. God will provide in His time.

…As he has done so generously at Southern Adventist University with, what is it, four Biology positions open?

LSU Board says ‘we apologize’

If we have any hope of winning back any of the precious souls lost because of this, then the message has to be clear and unequivocal — What happend was not right. What you were taught was not right.

Oh right, because having a papal bull style declaration is somehow going to change the position of those who have examined real, mainstream science and come to their conclusion.

Interesting line of thought…

La Sierra University won’t neglect creation teaching, president, chairman vow
The moment someone quotes an imbecile like David Asscherick with any credibility, who even Wikipedia states became a pastor without a college degree, you know they’re just pushing an anti-Science agenda and should lose all credibility.

It’s unfortunate that La Sierra has buckled under the ridiculous attacks that wreaked of McCarthyism. Off I go to non-Adventist colleges to get a REAL education! It’s too bad, really, I was seriously considering La Sierra.

“Autonomy and Academic Freedom”: WASC’s 2010 Review of LSU
@Richard Myers:

LSU and the Denomination should not allow WASC to impose its will on a Seventh-day Adventist institution. If WASC decides to pull its accreditation because LSU decided to stand up for educating truth, then LSU will be better off without them. As it now stands, as far as this issue is concerned, WASC appears more in the business of racketeering than accrediting.

WASC should keep its hands off the teachings of the church as expressed in its educational arm.

Bravo, Jonathan! My feelings exactly! If this accrediation association can’t handle our church teaching its own beliefs in its own institution they should be told to take a flying leap at a rolling donut.

Are we really suggesting that La Sierra would be better off unaccredited? If you want an unaccredited school that teaches SDA beliefs, go to Hartland or Weimar. Leave La Sierra for those of us who want an Adventist campus that teaches science.
