Comment on “Autonomy and Academic Freedom”: WASC’s 2010 Review of LSU by Ernie Medina, Jr..

@Professor Kent:

In reading this thread, I have to agree with Sean, who, BTW, I know is not an “angry man”. In fact, reading the responses back and forth, I would have to say that you (Prof Kent) have a chip on your shoulder, judging from your responses. I have to admit that reading your response, I’m a bit surprised that a “professor” would respond this way in such a public forum.

BTW, I have no idea who you are, or if you’re even a prof at LSU–I’m just going by what is being posted in here. So I’m not some former student or LSU alum with a grudge. I’m a proud alum of AU so I can’t say that I’ve experienced first hand what is going on over at LSU, but I do have a number of faculty friends there and with a 13 y/o who will soon be choosing a college down the road, it will be interesting to see how all this turns out in the next few years.

AAA to examine LSU
@D. Fender:

I wouldn’t go that far, D. Fender. Being an alumnus of AU, I know Dr. Andreasen personally and he is a God-fearing man, so I would not expect for him to just give it a rubber-stamp of approval.

Also, while people are involved in running our church, and there have been instances of abuse and mis-use in our church administration (I saw some things first-hand as a SM in one of our division HQs), this is nothing new, judging from the Bible. Believe it or not, you will never find a “perfect” church, just like you will never find a hospital that only has “well people” in it! The church was made for sinners, which means we’re going to have “evil politics” now and then.

While there are “bad SDA administrators” at all levels, the vast majority of our leadership is dedicated, sacrificial, and God-fearing as well. No, they are not perfect (who is? I know I’m not, and I’m pretty sure you aren’t either), but we all do the best, with God’s grace.

And that’s what is the most amazing thing of all–what God can do with IMPERFECT people, “evil politics” and all! That way, we can know that there is no way we can get the credit when amazing things happen in our church!!! Only God can get the credit.

So no matter what happens with this issue at LSU, God’s will, will be done, DESPITE (or INSPITE) whatever WASC and AAA conclude. Ultimately, God is in control…this is HIS college, not the GC or the SDA church. ALL of this is His!!!

LSU Faculty Senate supports biology department
I know quite a few LSU faculty personally from the other schools (I don’t know any of the Biology faculty–I’m an alum of AU so know their biology faculty better), and I find it hard to believe that they would “affirm” the Bio profs’ clear evolutionary bent. I know these faculty friends of mine do not believe in evolution one bit, so my guess is that while this resolution says all the schools support their bio colleagues, I’m sure there’s more to this than meets the eyes.

I plan to ask around and see…;-)

Overall, it seems so clear to me that if these well-meaning bio profs want to promote evolution as THE way things started, then they should go to a public or non-SDA university. “Academic freedom” doesn’t mean you can accept church $$ and then have the “freedom” to teach things that go directly against the church! Why doesn’t the admin. and SECC get that???

GYC Q&A addresses universities who hire and protect evolutionists
Wow, the GC Prez practices motivational interviewing to deal with sticky issues! I’m impressed!
