A group of La Sierra University students complained to the board of trustees Friday that certain required courses lack appropriate emphasis on Jesus and the Bible.

A petition signed by 300 of La Sierra’s 1,400 students said the six core courses were unacceptable because they misrepresent the Christian God, and contain subversive attacks on Christianity and one-god beliefs.

“Our biggest opposition is that it attacks what the school was founded on, which is the Bible,” said Monte Bridges, a senior from Oregon. “It says, in essense, that all religions are paths to the same truths. The problem is that Christ said `I’m the truth; I’m the way; I’m the life.’ ” (Read more)

  1. The problems at LSU are with PEOPLE, PROFESSORS. In all of the back and forth over the last year, the real solution to the problem is with PEOPLE, PROFESSORS. Does anybody think we are going to change the minds of liberal PhD’s who have already made up their minds LONG ago? The solution is with PEOPLE, PROFESSORS. We need to get rid of those that have grown AWAY from our church and replace them with those that LOVE our church’s beliefs and want to convey that love of our beliefs and lifestyle to our children. All of the rest of this posturing is doing NOTHING. if you find out that there is fox in your hen house, do you lecture the fox on the fact that our beliefs are different than his, and then leave him in charge of the hen house? Are we stupid, or are we so ingrained with Adventist politics as usual that we can’t get rid of the fox. Our children are leaving because of the damage that these PEOPLE, PROFESSORS are doing? Isn’t it time to name names, and take decisive action? We are culpable for the action that we DON’T take.

  2. “Geraty said next year’s core courses will have more emphasis on the Seventh-day Adventist viewpoint but the course topics won’t change.

“Anytime you introduce a new program, there are criticisms,” he said. “But we will take seriously the concerns of students.

Steve Daily, the campus chaplain, said administrators have not paid attention to the students’ complaints about core since it was imposed three years ago.

“The students haven’t been listened to,” he said. “They’ve been ignored.”

“I think when that happens, there’s a problem,” said Daily, who has been a chaplain and instructor at La Sierra for 20 years.”

Obviously, the administration at LSU feels very comfortable about their authority and feel no sense of any threat to their agenda. “Complain if you want, we will still do as we please.” This is Geraty’s attitude.

We could wonder why he would even condecend to “listen” to any negative comments since he has made it clear there will be no change in the agenda?

No doubt, it is with the intent to claim they have seriously considered all the possibilities and “listened” to complaints about their agenda. But we can see any outcome was already pre-determined by administration. In fact, it was simply a patronizing insult to the students and anyone else who disagreed with their previous decision. How else could you interpret this statement….

Really? I wonder why many simply don’t believe what Geraty has said. Again, it is apparent he is very comfortable and feels very secure that he and the administration are above challenge either by the church, or anyone in it.

  5. The biology topics are valid. The evangelism for evolutionism inserted into the course topic is not.

That means that they need to change the CONTENT of the course such that it presents students with “critical thinking skills” when it comes to the myths, fictions, storytelling, smoke and mirror dance of evolution.

Students should be exposed to the very frank statements by atheist evolutionists who admit to some of the blunders, gaffs and flaws in the storytelling found in evolutionism mainstream evangelistic arguments.

Students should be exposed to the difference between actual science and evolutionist story telling.

Students should be introduced to the vast evidence for intelligent design that is readily observable in nature, in the lab, in biology — every day!

Students should be told that what we can and DO observe in nature is nothing at all like “birds come from reptiles”.

The simple truth is that observations in nature do NOT support evolutionism’s storytelling when it comes to biology.

All of these inconvenient details so carefully hidden from LSU students in todday’s coursework – need to come out into the light of day.

All of the “I believe in evolutionism no matter the science facts to the contrary” being promoted by LSU professors in biology and religion departments needs to be terminated.

LSU should compete with LLU and SAU and other SDA universities in coming up with new research programs in support of the I.D and creationist POV.

And finally – students should get the Romans 1 point that opposition to Intelligent Design is a distinctively atheist POV.

    Will LSU step up?

A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.

The strategy of providing a repressed somewhat/slightly muzzled evolutionist evangelist as the “LSU biology or religion professor” is not the far thinking strategy some seem to imagine.

  9. From the article above we have this –

“We pay a lot of money for a Christian education and we’re not being given it,” Bridges said.

Geraty said that although the university has students from more than 35 religions, its focus will always be in the Seventh-day Adventist tradition. The approach, he said, is scholarly, not Bible-study, as some students may have experienced in high schools.

“It’s not like Sunday school,” Geraty said. “It’s not like family worship. I think it’s just a question of growing up. And that’s the whole reason why you come to college.”

Seventh-day Adventists are Protestant Christians who consider Saturday, not Sunday, the holy day of the week. They expect Jesus to return to Earth soon.

Geraty said the school dropped its Bible school approach in the 1940s and ’50s.

“La Sierra University is not going to be a Bible college. If it was, that’s what we would be,” he said.

The students say they do not want a Bible school. They said they want to feel that their faith is given equal time with others, and that theories like evolution are taught alongside other theories, like creationism, as believed by Seventh-day Adventists.

Oddly enough – Geraty demonstrates the same insight and objectives in this religion department strategy as he did with his biology department strategy when president of LSU.

It is the same agenda –

    How “unnexpected”.

  10. Ron, Geraty may have been a leader in this rebellion, but he was not alone then, and his friends are still there, and their evil has come to fruition now. There is only ONE solution if the church is going to keep LSU, that is CLEAN HOUSE. I have said before, and I say it again, the problems at LSU are not with just the biology department, there are problems with the religion department too. Our fundamental belief on creation and origins is not the only FB under attack at LSU. There seems to be a number of professors who believe in gay marriage like Geraty, and continue to push that issue. Then there are the FB’s on 1844, the Heavenly Sanctuary, etc, which I’m sure have few followers at LSU. IT IS TIME TO CLEAN HOUSE AND START OVER AT LSU, or close it altogether.

Historically – no SDA biology department has ever run rogue against the denomination in promoting evolutionism “at all costs” without first having the support of the religion department.

It is a rule that has held true at LSU in triplicate.

Your exactly correct, Bob. Look at the LSU Religion Dept. to see one major reason WHY we have a problem in the Bio Dept.

Notice also how the so-called “religious” people are nowhere to be seen or heard anywhere, including this website, to either support us or support the evolutionists!

How’s about Fritz and his cronies joining the conversation to explain why they have been so quiet, silent, and invisible. The so-called “watchmen” of our SDA faith need to come out of their slumber and open their eyes to reality!

  17. Bob Pickle: Why did the PE article say that Geraty is president of LSU?

That’s a good point – Geraty can arguably be considered to be more of the architect for the current situation than Wisbey given the number of years he was presiding over the runaway evolution agenda at LSU.

BTW – nice going with that quote of GC 414-415 to Rich. That was perfect for the question regarding Rev 4 and 5.

  18. Bob, Wisby may have inherited the current problems, but that does not absolve him of his part in this fiasco. He is just as culpable for letting this go on under his watch, and for allowing students to be punished for speaking out the truth. The same goes for Ricardo Graham. He is just as much at fault for failing to decisively act and solve this problem. He did what Adventist administrators frequently do, gloss it over and hope it goes away. We can’t ruffle any feathers you know. It might hurt someone’s feelings, or they give big money to the church. EVIL! There is some information missing from the story that I’d like know. What were the classes? What are they called? What is taught in them? Why are they considered to be so important that every La Sierra student must take them?

These questions are not answered in this article, greatly limiting its usefulness (along with it being 12 years old).

  21. David, I don’t personally know what the curriculum of those core classes is, but I will guess that it is all about control and there is an agenda behind them.

In a university with many majors and departments like LSU has, department chairs and their respective professors have a fair amount of autonomy in what is taught to students in their discipline.

When Geraty and his crowd set up a system of classes that are required for all majors, it allowed a small group of liberal professors to control curriculum and infect students in all majors with their anti SDA ideas.

Someone please send in the course objectives and syllabi to these courses and let’s see if I’m right. If I’m wrong, I will say so. If I’m right, it will be just one more proof of the evil that is going on at LSU.

THE SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM IS WITH PEOPLE. People need to be PUBLICALLY replaced so that everyone knows what is happening. Behind the scenes SDA politics as usual is not going to fix this problem. Is there an SDA administrator who is going to be a Daniel and stand up for what is right, and do what is right, in spite of whatever fallout is causes? Administrators, your time is NOW? Will you be faithful or will you buckle to political correctness? This is your probation. You were put in power to lead, protect, and defend. The whole church is watching you. All of heaven is watching you. It’s time for action.

BTW – nice going with that quote of GC 414-415 to Rich. That was perfect for the question regarding Rev 4 and 5.

    in Christ,

    Bob
