New Adventist president envisions a church marked by prayer, revival

In his first address to employees at Seventh-day Adventist world church headquarters, church President Ted N. C. Wilson outlined a strategic plan for the denomination meant to spur a renewal of members’ commitment to the church’s mission.

Megan Brauner/Adventist News Network

An emphasis on personal and corporate prayer and the launch of a Revival and Reformation Committee at church headquarters featured prominently in the plan.

The belief that Christians cannot “hasten or delay” the Second Coming is a misconception, Wilson said. While the “manufacture” of programs or activities at church headquarters cannot “force” Christ’s return, a “revival of true godliness” and “humble submission to God” among Christians can, he said, citing a quote by church co-founder Ellen G. White.

In the New Testament book of Acts, Wilson said the apostles are described as being “of one accord” and “in one place” — conditions he cited as responsible for the outpouring of God’s spirit. God is looking for a similar mindset among Adventists today, he said.

Wilson said he recently received an email in which someone expressed concern that a push for revival among Adventists might usher in legalism or an exclusivist spirit.

Not so, Wilson assured more than 400 employees gathered in the auditorium of church headquarters today for the address. “This is not a legalistic message; this is a message of love, of hope and of encouragement … God has given us this message, and we are to share it, being as inclusive as possible,” he said.

Sharing that message hinges on prayer, Wilson said, urging employees to embrace an emphasis on personal and corporate prayer.

“You are dedicated, educated, consecrated people,” Wilson said, “but if we’re not praying in humility … our talents are worth virtually nothing[.]”

No single prayer style is mandatory, Wilson said. “If you don’t feel comfortable praying out loud, you don’t have to — you can just pray in your own mind. We’re not trying to force people into a certain ‘shoe’ and make it fit. But we’re to pray. I don’t know what people do without prayer,” he said.

Prayer is also expected to punctuate the meetings of the new Revival and Reformation Committee, Wilson said. “Don’t let the name put you off. Committees don’t necessarily kill everything,” he said. The committee is expected to gather “earnest” people striving to “help God’s people prepare a setting for [his] spirit to do his work,” Wilson said.

Armando Miranda, a world church general vice president, was named chair of the committee, with recently retired General Vice President Mark Finley serving as vice-chair in his new role as an assistant to the president for evangelism.

More than 400 employees of the Adventist Church’s headquarters building attended Wilson’s address, held during morning worship. The building is home to five church entities: the world church’s headquarters, the denomination’s North American Division, Adventist Risk Management, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency and Griggs University. Wilson outlined some specific expectations for the next five years. He introduced the launch of international bible and mission conferences, hubs where pastors, teachers, Health Ministries workers and others can convene to study the bible together to better grasp the church’s “spiritual destiny.” Ideally, Wilson said, the meetings will spur outreach. “We’re not just to sit there and draw everything in, but to go out,” he said.

The next five years will also see a continued emphasis on outreach through technology, Wilson said, citing the impact of the Hope Channel, Adventist World Radio, the Global Internet Evangelism Network and the church’s many Web-based ministries.

Wilson said the church under his watch would also safeguard core emphases such as Adventist education and Health Ministries. “Redoubling” the Connecting with Jesus project, in which Ellen G. White books are distributed to members worldwide, is also a priority, he said. Headquarters employees participated in the project this morning — a collection was taken to send copies of White’s book The Great Controversy to every household in the surrounding postal district.
Wilson also said involving young people in the church’s mission was his goal — “not just putting them on a committee, but going far beyond that.”

A focus on both evangelism and stewardship is expected to be the catalyst for the church’s success the next five years, Wilson said. “When you have those two things heading in the right direction, everything else falls into place.”

The strategic plan is not comprehensive or concrete, and is open to suggestion, Wilson said. “The Adventist Church is not an organization that promotes ‘kingly power.’ We don’t just have someone at the head who says, ‘That’s it, do it,’ and it happens … The best way is to come together in prayer in a setting where a multitude of counselors brings wisdom,” he said.
Soliciting the prayers and participation of employees as the church moves forward, Wilson said he wanted “open communication” throughout the building and the church. “My office is open. If you have an idea or suggestion — I don’t care how small or large it is — you can contact me and talk to me.”

  1. Well I wish him well. I hope he will forgive my scepticism however, I remember another Elder Wilson when I was a teenager who promised us that if we commited our lives completely to God and give a double tithe to the church that the Holy Spirit would be poured out in the Latter rain and the church would have all the money it needed to take the gospel to the entire world and Christ would come in our lifetime.

    My friends and I made that commitment, but what did we get in return? A church that is so consumed with orthodoxy that it drives out one great thinker after another in what seems to be a never ending series of witch hunts. It discriminates against women in order to maintain the Catholic doctrine of ordination, and what about mission? It’s only mission is to sustain and propigate itself. It certainly doesn’t look like Christ is coming any time soon.

    I’m sorry, at some point it just seems like an abusive relationship and this web site isn’t helping.

    The devil and his angels are great thinkers and they were driven out of heaven because of the rightness of God’s government.

    Looks like you’re in the “wrong” church. I doubt whether Elder Wilson “promised” you the return on your double tithe. Are you sure that’s what he actually said? As to the “witch hunt” stuff, we will continue to pursue this problem although those like yourself will chastise us unmercifully.

    So you’re making a prediction that Christ is not “coming soon?” On what basis. Many SDA’s see differently. Who are some of these “great thinkers” the Church has “driven out?” Desmond Ford? Just wondering. Please give us your list!

    So the “only mission” our SDA Church has is self propagation? You’d better start opening your eyes to what the Church is and has been doing all over the world. Maybe you’ve “missed” something?

    Please also explain what is “abusive” about the way the SDA Church has treated you. And, if so, why haven’t you left this so-called abuse?

    Certainly agreed. I believe that Holy Spirit touched many-many people around the world by this ministry (upload/link: audio, video, or document). Keep sharing God’s love!

  5. I thank God for our new president. When I joined this church back in 1986, I joined because it taught and stood firmly on the bible–much different from the church I left. Those of us who love the word of God will appreciate what president Wilson has shared. Those who want something else such as womens ordination and other unbiblical ideas will not only dislike elder Wilson, but also the 7th Day Adventist church as well. I think Exodus 16:8 says it well,”the Lord heareth your murmurings which ye murmur against him: and what are we? your murmurings are not against us (president Wilson), but against the Lord. I pray that those who seek to push against our new president, consider prayerfully what they are doing.

  6. Pastor Wilson is indeed a breath of fresh air and I am glad for his leadership and heaven bound direction. Let’s get back to the bible and following Christ as well as leading others to Christ as we should.
    We need to get behind and beside our president Wilson and take ourselves out of the equation. It’s about salvation his, yours, mine and the entire worlds’.

    This is very legitimate concern. By the way, what ever happened to ADRA? They used to accomplish so much, but today we never hear of them…at least I never do.

    The church has certainly moved off base considerable in the last few decades. And the end result will be exactly like the quote above unless something radical is forth coming in the near future.

    Some cinicism is appropriate in light of past and present history. None the less, some of us are optimistically hopeful that a real accountability is soon to come in many areas of church leadership.

    We need to keep in mind that it is challenges like this forum that creates a dynamic awareness in the whole church community. It is doubtful the church will discipline itself without lay members demanding such accountability. The issue on creation is only a beginning. Much more must be dealt with before we come to the end of the world. In the mean time, I won’t hold my breath until it happens. How about you?

    Noah’s Ark, I bet, was a stinky place with foul smells, and a lot of poop. They were locked up in there for a long time (more than 40 days).

    Question: if you were living at that time, would you want to be anywhere else?

    Think about that.

    No, I would not have wanted to be any place else. BUT I am convinced that the God who gave Noah the instructions for building that ark knew all about the sanitation needs of the people and animals that would live in it and He provided a way to take care of this. We will just have to wait ’till eternity to find out how He did it. I have no question but the inside of that ark was clean, sweet smelling and airy. My God doesn’t work any other way!

    I have so many questions to ask God about–and so many other things I want to know about.

    I am really looking forward to sitting and listening to Daniel and John discuss the two prophecy books they wrote. John had Daniel’s book to look at and study but Daniel didn’t have John’s. And I sm sure even John didn’t understand every thing Daniel wrote because so many were still in the future. And remember the last parts of Daniel were sealed until the “time of the end!”

    For that matter, most of what John wrote was also still in the future and there were no doubt many things he wrote that even he could not fully understand or visualize. In heaven they will be able to lay the two books side by side and compare them with what actually happened–and how wonderfully they were fulfilled by things that took place on this earth centuries after their books were closed and they were laid to rest.

    What a wonderful heavenly Father we have and what an amazing time that will be–I CAN HARDLY WAIT!

  13. A couple of days ago I received my latest copy of Acts and Facts from the Institute For Creation Research which, as far as I know, is not affiliated with any particular church organization but which is staffed with Bible-believing scientists whose passion in life is to defend the Biblical account of Creation. I wish our church had something as forceful and emphatic as this site on the subject–and, frankly, I have a rather dfficult time understanding why we don’t! As I understand it, we are supposed to be the “head and not the tail” of all things Scriptural.

    I don’t mean to be critical but, also frankly, I was rather disappointed in what I heard SOME, not all, of our creation scientists say at the GC session in Atlanta. Somehow it did not always seem to have that “ring of certainty” (to me anyhow) that Acts and Facts seems to have. Am I missing something? If so, I’d appreciate it if someone would tell me how and where.

    As usual, there were a number of very interesting articles in this issue and, as usual, they ring with confidence in the Creator God and the marvelous way He designed things “in the beginning”–things that simply could not have just “happened.” It took a wonderful Mind that knew what it was doing to design and create even the very lowest of the low creatures that live in this world. There is simply no way any of these creatures–or mankind– could have “evolved” thru random acts of “whatever” with no “Mind” behind it.

    And there isn’t a single sign of anything like this still taking place today. Dogs are still dogs, cats are still cats, birds are still birds, horses, goats and bees are still horses, goats and bees–with not a single example of anything now recognizable slowly changing into anything else recognizable or unrecognizable today. Yes, we get two headed animals or other such deformities (whether in dogs, cats, horses or people but they are still dogs, cats, horses or people.) And no one has ever seen a monkey turning into a human being. If evolution ever took place why isn’t it continuing today? Who or what stopped it–and why?

    Where does common sense come into play?

    A little girl came to her mother one day and asked her where she came from. The mother told her the wonderful creation story and ended by saying we all came from a loving God.
    Later she ask her father the same question and he told her everyone descended from monkeys. Thoroughly confused she returned to her mother and told her what her father had said.
    The mother smiled and said, “Honey, I told you where My family came from and he told you where HIS came from!”

    It is what Felix said to Paul after Paul’s testimony about Jesus.

    By the way, at least some of this debate about origins is simply a diversion to direct our focus from other more subtle issues of sin and apostacy in the church.

    Bible believing Christians have always confessed faith in God as the creator as stated in Genesis. If you don’t believe in this account, you are not even a Christian, let alone a SDA Christian. We hold this position as imperative especially since the bible Sabbath is attached to it.

    The devil may stir up obvious error to cover less obvious error. And while we “bicker” about the obvious, the subtle diversions are making more headway in the church. If we make our position clear, little needs to be said to patronize on and on the skeptics and unbelievers who love the debate as it gives them credibility by way of continued discussion.

    Certainly our leaders must discipline those who abandon and attack the church position. They are the ones who should be chided more than the apostates if the leaders ignore and/or fail to accept their responsibility in these things. To “bicker” with the apostates is counter-productive.

    We must pray that our leaders will act in harmony with our faith and encourage them to do their duty in this situation. If they don’t, they are the ones who need to be chided and even replaced by those who will accept their responsibility and act accordingly.

    Oops! I should have known where that came from! Thanks for reminding me. I have a problem with my sleep pattern and often wake up in the middle of the night and cannot go back to sleep for several hours–so I get up and see what’s going on in the world by opening my computer. Sad to say, my mind is seldom at it’s best at that time of night and, at 86, isn’t always what it once was either!

    I have a tendency to agree with you here on this perhaps being “diversion to direct our focus from other more subtle issues of sin and apostasy in the church,” though it is truly a BIG issue and needs to be dealt with speedily and effectively.

    I am shocked over the length of time this has been allowed to fester. I knew nothing about it until this web site was given to me by my oldest daughter a while back. I suspect there are a great many-esp. in my generation,who would almost rather die than get anywhere near a computer– so know little or nothing about this situation since it is not discussed in church–at least not in my church until recently.

    We are truly Laodiceans–all of us–in one way or another. Your sins are without a doubt different from the ones I struggle with–but sin is sin–and we are all lukewarm sinners! When we point a finger at someone else we must remember that three fingers are pointing back at us. Still, that doesn’t excuse the “watchmen on the walls of Zion” who need to stand up and do something about this evil thing that is in probably a lot more places than LSU.

Getting a new leader for our church makes no difference because we as individuals need to do our part and not expect the leader to come with a great plan, bretheren remember they are human too, and that means they will make wrong decissions; therefore, we need on our own make an effort to fulfill the purpose that christ calls us to do. In his Sabbath address to the GC last month, President Wilson stated that we need to revisit the events surrounding the 1901 General Conference, specifically referring to unbelief in the church having prevented the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Our energies are better spent supporting our leaders who are focusing on understanding that most precious message of righteousness by receiving the faith of Jesus. That message will combine with those of all three angels to not only revitalize our church, but lighten the entire earth with the glory of God.

  20. I agree wtih Pastor Wilson that we need to seek revival with prayer, but I would also like to note that it seems to me that God will refuse to listen to the unrepentant. Repentance, as we should all know is a sorrow for and turning from our sins (and true repentance is a gift to us from God–i.e. we can’t do it ourselves), and it seems like as a corporate institution we are still insisting on continuing our rebelliousness and disobedience, so how do we think we are going to have God listen to us?

    As a church, we were specifically instructed to NOT concentrate our resources in small areas, but be as leaven that mingles with all the flour. Yet, in spite of this, we have our Adventist ghettos located in various cities throughout the country and throughout the world (not to step on any toes here, but for instance, Loma Linda).

    In addition, we have been instructed to work the cities from rural outposts, yet where do you see this instruction being followed? (It is very rarely followed!)

    I think emergency medicine is great, and indeed it is irreplaceable in a trauma situation. Yet, as a church, we have invaluable light on treatments that could be given for a fraction of the cost to treat the poor and sick, and in the mean-time be a real light that shines in this darkness of a sin-filled world (lifestyle treatments, and natural treatments including hydrotherapy, etc.). But have we followed the instruction given to us on this? Generally NO!

    Our publishing houses were intended to be a means to distribute our literature throughout the world like the “leaves of autumn” and we have several of them that are world class institutions. I would think it the mission of these places to so cover the globe with our literature that there was no place that didn’t have any. Have we done that? NO! In fact, private ministry’s (for instance Light Bearer’s Ministry, in Oregon) have taken it upon themselves to publish literature by the shipping container full, and ship it to places around the world at no cost at all to the receiver. It is all accomplished by people supporting that ministry (If you really want to help God’s work move forward, support them!!!!). So, why haven’t our established publishing houses done the same?

    We have a work (throughout the Church) that is being administered by ‘businessmen’ and while there is the need for accountability, there is also the need for a Holy vision and sacrifice. Mrs. White said something to the effect that our work begun in sacrifice, will also end in sacrifice. If we really want to see Jesus come, we all need to do our own part, and yes, this may include significant self-sacrifice. Remembering the poor widow and her two mites, how many of us have given of our dire want, and not merely of our abundance?

    Going back to Pastor Wilson. I think it is important to proceed with prayer seeking a revival, but we also need to be obedient to the instruction that has already been given to us. If we aren’t obedient to what has already been told us, we can have no expectation of new light, or new outpourings of God’s Spirit.

    God requires us to follow the light already given, and as a church, we are not doing that. No revival will come without having a reformation first. To expect anything less is mere folly.

  21. Elder Wilson has the right vision and clearly senses the need for revival and reformation inside the Church. This is key to receiving the Latter Rain. The church must purify itself and that means reformation, it must be energized with supernatural power and that means revival. God will send power to move ahead – to a church that is pointed in the right direction.

    WE have to let God turn the ship aright – and that is going to be painful for evolutionists, but also to a number of other groups trying to water down the bible and replace doctrine with notions of “political correctness” regarding life-styles etc. It will also be uncomfortable for those who think the Bible is NOT to be held up as “the Word of God” and that inspiration of prophets does not actually work.

    The benefit of someone like Elder Wilson is that there is a vocal “voice” for reformation that is sounding at the top. The sleeping saints need to wake-up stand-up and be counted. God will make a short work of this with or without you – so choose “with”.

    in Christ,

    Bob

  22. JohnB, I agree with you completely. Many of our institutions have missed the mark as far as following the leadership, guidance, and direction we have had in the past. Not only “institutions” but our Churches also. Elvin Adams, in his “Handbook of Health Evangelism” explains how “medical missionary work” should be done from our churches. He documents this both from the Bible and the “Spirit of Prophecy” of Ellen White. Is it being done this way? Not anywhere that I can see.

    However, not doing what we should in the way we should is different than purposely and blatantly opposing our biblical beliefs, which we see going on at LSU and other places.

  23. Ron,
    The problem with this is Elder Wilson is not his father Neil; he is his own man and not in any way responsible for anything Neil Wilson said or did. I have not heard the “tithe and offering money for the latter rain” idea, but anyone who seriously studies the Spirit of Prophecy will know that the major portion of the latter rain will fall at the Sunday law.

    [edit]

    Elder Ted Wilson is the man who I believe will help put God’s church more solidly upon the platform of undivided, unadulterated, pure truth of God’s Holy Word. Many Adventist ministries such as It Is Written are in verity taking the 3 angels messages to the world even aside from the apostasy Ellen White said would come and is here now. A position of tearing down God’s true church will surely result in gross darkness for the participant.

    “I was shown that if God’s people make no efforts on their part, but wait for the refreshing to come upon them and remove their wrongs and correct their errors; if they depend upon that to cleanse them from filthiness of the flesh and spirit, and fit them to engage in the loud cry of the third angel, they will be found wanting. The refreshing or power of God comes only on those who have prepared themselves for it by doing the work which God bids them, namely, cleansing themselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” {CD 33.3}

  24. Arlene,

    While I realize there is lessons to learn from the past;righteousness by faith is not found in 1888 or 1901; it is found in the merits of Jesus Christ, found only in the Word of God. Those who profess righteousness by faith In Christ and yet deny Him by their actions will be found wanting. It may be helpful to study church history in some regards; but over and over I see persons and sub-groups in Adventism looking back in history for real answers and not focusing on God’s Word and the SOP. The 1888 MSC comes to mind.

    It is more helpful to look back and see how God has led the Adventist prophetic movement and we can have confidence in the pillars of faith becoming sanctified through obedience to the Word of God:

    John 17:17 Sanctify them through your truth: your word is truth.

    John 14:15 If you love me, keep my commandments.

    Rev 22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

    “I heard those clothed with the armor speak forth the truth with great power. It had effect. Many had been bound; some wives by their husbands, and some children by their parents. The honest who had been prevented from hearing the truth now eagerly laid hold upon it. All fear of their relatives was gone, and the truth alone was exalted to them. They had been hungering and thirsting for truth; it was dearer and more precious than life. I asked what had made this great change. An angel answered, “It is the latter rain, the refreshing from the presence of the Lord, the loud cry of the third angel.” {CET 177.2}

    Many Backsliders Will Return.–When the storm of persecution really breaks upon us, the true sheep will hear the true Shepherd’s voice. Self-denying efforts will be put forth to save the lost, and many who have strayed from the fold will come back to follow the great Shepherd. The people of God will draw together, and present to the enemy a united front. . . . The love of Christ, the love of our brethren, will testify to the world that we have been with Jesus and learned of Him. Then will the message of the third angel swell to a loud cry, and the whole earth will be lightened with the glory of the Lord.–Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 401. (1900) {Ev 693.2}

    The Loud Cry.–During the loud cry, the church, aided by the providential interpositions of her exalted Lord, will diffuse the knowledge of salvation so abundantly that light will be communicated to every city and town. The earth will be filled with the knowledge of salvation. So abundantly will the renewing Spirit of God have crowned with success the intensely active agencies, that the light of present truth will be seen flashing everywhere.–Review and Herald, Oct. 13, 1904. {Ev 694.1}

    “None are condemned until they have had the light and have seen the obligation of the fourth commandment. But when the decree shall go forth enforcing the counterfeit sabbath, and the loud cry of the third angel shall warn men against the worship of the beast and his image, the line will be clearly drawn between the false and the true. Then those who still continue in transgression will receive the mark of the beast.” –Ev 234, 235 (1899). {LDE 225.4}

  25. They will know we are Christians by our love?  (Quote)

    Janelle, I absolutely agree with you, which is why Romans 13:10 is so applicable where it says that “love is the fulfilling of the law.” In other words, we’ll be known by our love to God and our fellow man, which will be dispersed throughout all of our acts in obedience. It is isn’t a mere formalism or legalism. It is the true and Everlasting Gospel, where God writes His law on our hearts, and then our obedience becomes just the outworking of God’s will in our lives. (But, it is obedience nonetheless).

  26. I am just quoting from memory, but all faithful SDA’s know that E.G.White said that what the Church needs is a true revival of faith and holiness and that revival will come in answer to prayer and the study od the books of Daniel and Revelation. Elsewhere she said that we should not remove the old land marks of prophecy. May someone, please, provide the appropriate and accurate quotations. If this is what Elder Wilson wants to do with the help of God, we must like Hur and Aaron keep his hands up until complete victory over Amalek!

    Cuniah, We’ve got lots more out here in California besides Amalek to worry about. A whole “tribe” of liberals which has infiltrated our SDA Church while the “watchmen” have been asleep for decades!
