An appeal to our leadership

La Sierra University biology department endorses the theory of evolution and gives it preferential treatment over the Seventh-day Adventist Church's position on a recent, six-day creation.

We urge the LSU Board of Trustees to stay committed to evaluating and assessing the LSU biology department, and to assure the teaching of evolution takes place within the context of Adventist beliefs regarding creation.

We appeal to our Pacific Union Conference and General Conference leadership to do everything possible to ensure core church beliefs will be upheld and taught favorably in classrooms.

The viability of the Seventh-day Adventist Church depends greatly on the manner in which professors teach our beliefs in the classroom. The church did not create educational institutions to promote beliefs contradicting fundamental church doctrine.

God has appointed you to be watchmen, and who knows but that you have come to your leadership position for such a time as this.

I totally support the need for our General Conference to take action against those in our schools who are teaching evolution as fact. This is completely contrary to Scripture and Mrs. White's teachings.

Christiane Marshall, Ohio, Columbia Union, Inter-American
Our schools are a crucial aspect of our church's ministry. Controversy such as this hurts our students and creates a need for students to take sides. The longer this takes to be resolved, the more long-term damage will be done. My prayer is that this will be resolved very very soon.

Matthew Leffler, Illinois, Lake Union, North American

Inge Anderson, British Columbia, Canadian Union, North American
It does no good to require a single course that purports to teach the evolution/creation conflict. What is necessary is to hire teachers who actually understand that the evidence can be interpreted within the framework of evolutionism or creationism -- depending on our world view. And it is necessary to hire teachers with a biblical world view so that they can explainn how the evidence fits within the biblical framework.

Leon Wellington, Florida, Southern Union, North American
I unreservedly support this resolution. When we can no longer support the position of the Church, then we are honor bound to find another job. If such workers do not leave voluntarily, the organization should release them with cause. The Church is bigger than all of us, and we must all be true to ourselves and to God.

I'm not looking to humiliate La Sierra, the Conference, Union, or the General Conference. I'm also not looking to humiliate the professors, who may in fact be nice individuals. I am simply appealing to the church leadership to clearly, fairly, and comprehensively investigate whether naturalistic macro-evolution is supported in the classroom, and then if so, identify that La Sierra and its administration, and whomever else has known about this for years, has sinned. Then, of course, cut out the cancer and move ahead. If such an investigation finds that naturalistic macro-evolution is not supported in the classroom, then explain how the syllabi, published works, and professorial comments all appear to unambiguously support error.

Joe Cooper, Georgia Cumberland, Southern, North American

The words found in 3SG 90-91 appear to apply directly to the situation at LSU.

Evolution provides the most direct assault on the foundation of our Adventist statement of beliefs that can be imagined. If we do not have the leadership to confront this extreme level of error that is so opposed to our mission as a denomination - where WILL we be able to take a stand?

Jason Miller, Michigan, Lake, North American
As a student in one of our universities, I urge our leadership to ensure that all teachers are uplifting the beliefs of God's worldwide church.

William J. Key, Southeastern California Conference, Pacific Union Conference, North American
As SDA parents and grandparents, neglecting this problem is not a sensible option. Professors who do not support our SDA beliefs have no business accepting a paycheck for teaching our children.

Gloria Van Dolson, Northern California, Pacific Union, North American

Stanley W Pugh O.D., Washington, North Pacific, North American

Birger Draget, Kansas-Nebraska, Mid-America, North American
I trust that our leaders will not sacrifice SDA college students on the altar of endless patience with professors who don't appear to have the integrity needed to resign rather than to be promoting beliefs contradicting fundamental church doctrine.

Paul Williams, Upper Columbia, North Pacific, North American
God is not mocked. We must keep with the truth of God's word and His counsels to our church. No compromise of beliefs is acceptable. Only fools venture upon Satan's ground.

Daniel Urrutia, M.D., Central California, Pacific, North American
I, my sons and many relatives and friends are alumni of LSU and want to assure you that what Educate Truth is bringing into the open is fact. We pray that the appropriate action will be taken by the church leadership. Have the watchmen waited until the enemy is in the midst before they sound the trumpet? Let's not wait any longer. The casualties are many! May the Lord give you the courage and wisdom to meet this problem head-on.

In all Seventh-day Adventist institutions, every teacher, doctor, scholar, pastor, elder, professor, and member is bound by the creed of Sola Scriptura and the Spirit of Prophecy. To profess Adventism and refuse to stand by its core principles to the effect of using Adventist resources in order to destroy the very foundation upon which the organization was built, shall not be tolerated. May God's will be done!

Carolyn Millard, Montana, North Pacific, North American

Brian Wilson, Washington, North-Pacific Union, North American
As an individual and as a missionary on the General Conference payroll, I fully support the effort to ensure that nothing is taught as truth in our classrooms that is not in harmony with our fundamental beliefs.

Earl Thorp D.M.D., Northern Calif., Pacific, North American
It was God's will from the Schools of the Prophets To LSU that our children should be taught His truth rather than the false doctrines of men. We must deal with this error.

This issue caused my son to doubt the church and
then leave it behind. How sad. We need to take a stand and remove those faculty who insist upon teaching error rather than truth. The delay in action only causes more students to doubt.

Eric Livingston, NNSW, Australian, South Pacific
This anomalous situation is now open. It would seem that we need action of some kind to ensure that students and parents have legitimate expectations honoured--that an SDA education will be given in an SDA educational institution. Not to act would be perceived as uninterested in truth and justice (paying more for receiving worse than less), lacking will and courage, and/or political compromise. Not an enviable situation for administrators, but we all have to take a stand at some time.

Robert Bamford, SECC, Pacific, North American

This issue is of the utmost importance. It is foundational not only to our church but more importantly to a clear understanding of the character of God. We must not compromise on this issue.

Ann A. Gimbel, Washington (state), North Pacific Union, North American
The Word of God does not purport to be a scientific text. But the God who created the plan of salvation also inspired the writing of the old and new testaments. My life is staked on Christ's death and resurrection. My belief in the rest of the Bible is life changing. I cannot find salvation in science text books. I can only trust science when it is upheld by the Word of God. The Word gives me great peace. Science, when it corroborates the Word is awe inspiring. As a young woman in public high school I was tested on the "facts" of evolution. I answered, according to the text but wrote in my real answer according to the Word of God. I was reared in a home where the Bible and Bible study were revered. Public school and evolutionary beliefs did not challenge my faith. I knew in whom I believed. However, when students are in an Adventist environment, in an Adventist institution and a professor teaches his students to question the Word, he is taking advantage of the trust parents have in the institutions of the church. He is using his/her profession in an unethical manner. Where is the pleasure and the honor of being a professional when one is no longer following one's own code of honor. I feel sorry for one who has made a decision to degrade the Word of God before a classroom of young people. The thrill of refuting God's Word cannot match the thrill of upholding it. May God protect our students and give wisdom to our leaders. Ann A. Gimbel MPH

This must be stopped for it is the very tool that is being used to undermine our beliefs in the Biblical doctrines as Seventh-day Adventist!

Michael Jon Cookenmaster, Rocky Mountain Conference, Mid-America Union, North American
Both my wife and I are alumni of La Sierra and are greatly distrubed by the lack of adhearance to Biblical teaching and the guidance of the Spirit of Prophecy, especially when Sister White has been so clear in the Books Education, and Testitonies to the church on the mater of evolution.

Randall Steffens, KY/TN, Southern, North American

Gerry C. Wagoner, Ohio, Columbia Union, North American
If you say what does it take to be a Christian I would say “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, that God has raised Him from the dead, and repent – if you with your heart and mind, trust Jesus, I would say “You are a believer.”

Then you come to me and you say what does it take to belong to your church? I say, “If you join this particular church where I am a member, there are certain doctrinal beliefs that you have to believe. For instance, you can’t believe that the Bible is 90% garbage and 10% nice and still be a member of that body. You can’t do that. There are certain doctrines to which you are committed. There is also a certain code of Biblical conduct to which you are committed. So if you belong to a community of believers, it is not just a belief in Christ but a certain harmonic expression of that belief that you are committed to.”

Now, you say what does it take to teach at an Adventist school or our Universities? I say “Now you have to add even more. So with each line of affiliation you put the plus, plus, plus. Not because the second and the third make you a Christian but it places upon you a greater accountability and responsibility as a dispenser of truth to which you are held accountable by a community of believers.”

It is both unethical and dishonest to receive payment from Adventists while weakening the Biblical faith of its members.

Evolution and Darwinian thinking is wide spreading. This really should not be an issue in our schools. Schools come with sacrifice as the cost is not cheap, but worth it. May our leaders look at what is happening and respond in a way that will build up the church and His kingdom. (pastor at Waterford Riverside & school and Livingston churches in Michigan.)

Larry Green, Michigan, Lake Union, North American
Dear leaders: Yes, deal kindly and Biblically with those in error and apostacy - but since the lines are drawn, and positions taken (in writing), you must deal with it, sometimes having to "meet it head on", as we are counseled from the pen of inspiration. And most definitely while we should be concerned with the FEW erring ones (2 or 3?) we have a MUCH greater respnsibility to the HUNDREDS, or more that have been (and WILL be) affected that could lose their way from error! -- agreed? This is why Jesus had to act in Heaven, so the other 2/3 would not be lost. Bottomline - ACT, not rashly or unkindly, but ACT. Blessings on you - you are being prayed for -and watched.

Dear Sirs:
I respectfully submit that this 'debate' has been allowed to go on for way too long. It should have never happened. There is NO debate with evolution in the SDA denomination and it should NOT be allowed to be taught contrary to the core belief of the SDA church. I see it as a crime and a sin against our precious young people who go to our universities and schools looking for truth and a foundation on which to stand. When they see the controversies that are being promulgated in the classrooms and the inconsistencies with the professors, it weakens their faith and trust in our church and institutions.
Please, for Jesus' sake, and for the sake of our young people, take a decided stand against this blasphemy of promoting evolution in any form, and give our young people something to be proud of - a governing body of dedicated leaders who are Unashamed of the Truth to which we as SDA's have stood for over a hundred and fifty years. Please don't let your people down. We are all watching you - and so is God.
Sincerely,
Nancy Riedesel

To endorse the theory of evolution is to support the idea that God is not the Creator. In the Bible God says He is. Jesus corroborates it (Mat 19:4-5). If God is not the Creator, then He is a liar. Then the Bible, the Sabbath, the plan of salvation and many other Bible teachings are lies. If you throw away the core concept of God as the Creator, everything else, crumbles.

Shirley Johnson, British Columbia, Canadian, North American
Do we still believe the Bible or not?? Are we still the "people of the Book"? Satan can make anything seem to be true if he wishes. He can throw down a stick and make it appear as a serpent. We know that in the end (NOW) we cannot rely on our senses, or we will be deceived. We must uphold God's truths. Having an Adventist school is completely pointless, if we are not teaching the truth there. If "untruth" is taught there, may as well go to a cheaper school.
Stick to the Word - even though it be an "inconvenient truth".

I am not an SDA but am a Christian attending an SDA university. It is shameful that a proclaimed Christian (SDA) university would openly support Holy Bible contradiction. It is imperative that our leaders take a firm stand on the Biblical truths our faith was founded on. My prayer is for these conference and union leaders to have the courage to uphold the Biblical view of creationism and to ensure that the teachers are teaching this worldview. The time for patience is over (at the expense of our young peoples faith in God) and now is the time to act decidedly for God's Word.

Peggy Kennimer, Texas, Southwestern, Inter-American
It is not necessary to study the false or artificial in order to know and recognize the true. If the true is diligently studied, the false will become apparent. Evolution is against the SDA core belief system and should not be tolerated in our educational system. If professors wish to teach "scientifically" (??) and not Biblically they should teach in a worldly institution. Why is this tolerated? As the brother before me said...we know. My prayers are with us all as we stand on the edge of eternity.

We’ve all heard it said that we need patient tolerance, that in the haste to remove someone from a position we may cause them to loose their way spiritually. This sounds commendable. However, how long do we leave a person in a position where they influence others negatively, especially young minds? How long do we strive with them when their positions are set in their way of influence against Scripture and have been for years? Maybe the call of striving for these souls are outweighed by their negative influences? Perhaps the attitude of wait and see gives those who could move on the matter a way out of the impending conflict?

Folks, we’re dealing with hard core evolutionists here. They are not newcomers to our campuses. Their positions have been made clear by their actions for some time. The cry for their removal has been ignored for a long period of time. Will you be a standard bearer? How will you answer to God for waiting longer?

Listen to Roger Morneau's video "A Trip into the Supernatural". He was told by the satanist priest that the theory of evolution was one of Satan's brilliant ideas back in the 1700's to prepare man for the last deception in the end times. He knew nothing of Adventism at that time.

The debate on long vs short age of life isn't going to end. That isn't the real issue here. The issue is whether it is right to use an organizations funds to teach the exact opposite of the the official position of the organization. They are free to teach & believe as they do, but not in an official Church position using the Church's funds. And please, regardless of which position we hold, treat others as you wish to be treated... one of Christianity's most basic principles.

This resolution is an excellent beginning point for resolving the present controversey. However, professors should not hired or retained if they do not consistently demonstrate their full belief in SDA core teachings, of which Creation vs. Evolution is only one. In my opinion, no one should ever be hired to teach or influence young men and women in an SDA institution who are not fully, 100% convicted in their own soul that the truths taught and upheld by the SDA church are Biblical in nature and can be reasonably defended as being compatible with "sola Scriptura."

Our schools need to be revamped fom the pre-school up as far as religious instruction is concerned. When a senior academy student says (after taking a course in Daniel in one of our academies) "I was amazed to learn that Daniel in the Lions' den was a true story.I always thought it was a fairy tale like Cinderella!" I know this to be a true story because I am well acquainted with the friend she said it to--who had been taught Daniel by her mother and grandmother for many years. The girl who made this remark was reared an SDA and had attended SDA schools all her life. I've mentioned this to several ministers and other workers only to be met with a shrugged shoulder and a shakened head. Let's bring back our old Bible books such as "God's Great Plan" and "Tell it to the World." They woud need to be modernized with colored pictures, etc.--but NOT THE TEXT! Those lessons have stayed with me all these years (I'm 85+ now)and I am appaled at the "pablum" our chioldren are currently getting. (Maybe things have changed in the last few years since this happened and I sincerely hope so but I haven't looked at a Bible book used in our grade schools in a number of years so I can't say for sure.
At any rate, we need to clean up the "roots" of our educational tree as well as trim off the bad limbs at the top!

I attended La Sierra in 1967-68. Teachers and teachings now need to be returned to the core values Adventism represents; Bible truth and the Spirit of Phrophecy.

Kirk Weedman, Oregon, Pacific Union Conference, North American
The lack of leadership to meet this crisis head on has become very apparent. It may be we need not only a thorough clean up of staff at LSU, but of the Board of Trustees, the local CA conference and even beyond. Will the real leadership please stand up? Your lack of of leadership is allowing the destruction of our youth and of many in our church - you can't JUST be concerned about those teaching apostasy! Wake up and speak up before its too late. Until this crisis is stopped I am recommending to those I know, not to support the the school or send there children there. Maybe we need to stop financial support of the conference and NAD until this is cleaned up. Once its cleaned up then send in our financial support.

I believe that it is the responsiblity of our leaders to put a stop to the teaching of evolution in our schools. If this type of teaching does not stop then eventually SDA parents may feel that it is not important to send their children to our schools. They can learn about evolution in community colleges which are much cheaper. We are willing to make sacrifices for our children to receive a Bible-based education in our schools. I think teachers that are not willing to teach SDA doctrines should not be employed by our church schools. I will make this a matter of prayer.

From a Biblical perspective the theory of Evolution is patently wrong. Within the context of the scientific method, it can not be defended on the grounds of observable and verifiable evidence. It is a theory based on a philosophical foundation which contradicts the SDA worldview and promotes atheism. Our educational systems have no business promoting a philosophy of origins which erodes personal faith in the creator of our universe, the God who redeemed us, and the One we serve.

I personally believe it's outrageous that 1)the GC doesn't have more control over our educational system then it does and 2) that we hire teachers (guides) who themselves are not totally committed to the beliefs of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. I find it appauling the lack of backbone seen in our leadership today. Positive action should be initiated by the General Conference at this time.

Pastor Maurice Witt, Georgia-Cumberland, Southern Union, North American
Our denominational leaders sometimes are frustrated by all the dollars going to the conservative indepentent ministries. But when these stand strongly and decidely for Biblical truth and denominational leaders do not, then we should not be surprised as our members send their money to organizations that do clearly uphold the truth as it is in God's Word.

There is a line drawn in the sand. All who have signed this petition have chosen to stand with God. Others regard "Higher education" as the fruit of human thought and effort. But this is an absurdity which He who rules in the heavens looks upon with contempt. When the word of God is laid aside for books that do not lead to God and to an understanding of the kingdom of heaven, education is a perversion of the name. Higher education of the world has proved itself a farce. Now the world is in the church and school. With the education being given at La Sierra, teachers mingle the sentiments of infidel authors. Thus they have sown tares in the minds of the youth. They give utterance to sentiments that should not be presented to young or old. They have sown seed that will bear shameful fruit.

When straight, solemn testimony is needed, in rebuking sin and iniquity, even though it be in those of high position, we ought not hold our peace, but heed the instruction of the God of truth, when he commands, "Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and show my people their transgressions, and the house of Jacob their sins." Those who love God will stand as faithful watchmen upon the walls of Zion,--not to hide sin, not to flatter the wrong-doer, not to obtain the sympathy of their brethren, but to meet the approval of God. They will not suppress one syllable of truth that should be brought out, in reproof, or warning, or in vindication of the righteousness of the oppressed, in order to gain the favor and influence of any one. In a crisis, they will not be found in a neutral position, but they will stand firmly on the side of righteousness and truth, even when it is difficult to take this position; and to maintain it may imperil their prosperity, and deprive them of the friendship of those whom they love.

It's past time for the LSU biology dept. to get their collective heads out of the sand and realize that there is plenty of good science out there that refutes commonly accepted evolutionary theory. If they were serious about truth, they would invite someone like Dr. Walter Veith to give his Creation/Evolution lectures. The eyes of students would be opened, and they would not be so likely to fall for the clever evolutionary propaganda.

Alice Eads, Carolina, Southern Union, Inter-American
Creation is a key part of who we are as SDA's. I think the GC needs to do something about getting these professors out of our schools. This controversy is not only hurting the teachers but also the students who believe what they are taught to some degree. They are teaching heresy when teaching evolution as fact!! Not only should they be taken out of our learning institutions but out of the SDA Church unless they change their beliefs. It is up to our leadership to take care of this problem and do it quickly or else the leadership may be changed!

Bob Pickle, Minnesota Conference, Mid-America Union, North American
The evolutionists I have talked to who try to claim to be Seventh-day Adventists often don't stop at throwing out what the Bible teaches about creation. For example, Erv Taylor, a guest lecturer for one of LSU's problematic science classes, could not name for me one single Bible story that he believed actually occurred as written.

We need teachers in our schools who are committed to Scripture and to our message, including the biblical accounts of creation and Noah's flood.

Students who end up being taught evolution as fact in one of our schools should request and should be given a refund.

If a school teaches evolution as fact, is it infringing upon a trademark of the Seventh-day Adventist Church if it also claims to be a Seventh-day Adventist school?

Let there be no false advertising in claiming to give a Seventh-day Adventist education if a school is instead teaching evolution as fact.

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. We and our intitutions of learning must teach the true character of God for that is at the heart of the controversy between good and evil. The Bible defines God to be perfect in every way, and creating a "Good" and perfect world prior to the fall. Certainly "Good" does not include death and decay as evolution requires. When God restores the world to it's perfect state, the Bible is very clear that death will no longer continue. Therefore God's perfect character is capable of and requires creation and restoration of a world and universe free from death. Teaching anything to the contrary strikes at the very heart of God's character and is the reason the enemy has used evolution as one of his primary tools to deny God's children from knowing, loving, and living with God for eternity. We must not side with the enemy. "...choose you this day whom you will serve...", Joshua 24:15.

My family has raised us to stand for values. Public universities allow you to believe in creation but teach evolution. We need to teach creation and if we teach anything about evolution we need to teach the details to explain why it is not as clearly the scientific explanation that everyone thinks it is. If the professors cannot do this then they should be asked to leave or should leave of their own accord. There is no meeting of the doctrines of salvation by faith and love with that of survival of the fittest!

Robert Helm, Ohio, Columbia, North American
I have read enough literature on the topics of creation and evolution to know that serious arguments can be made in favor of both positions. For this reason, it is not in the interest of education to teach Dogmatic Darwinism. Furthermore, despite the hype from theistic evolutionists, Darwinism is not philosophically compatible with Christianity, and college students are intelligent enough to see that this is the case.

I support the General Conferance taking the STRONGEST and most EXPEDIENT measures necessary in order to bring all of our schools and teachers back into agreement with the Bible and Spirit of Prophecy. " To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. " Do we need to pay out hundreds of thousands of dollars for for the blind (evolutionists) to undo all that we have labored for and sacrificed for years? I think not!! I had to send my daughter to our college in Canada for 5 years because of the sad state of our colleges in the USA. Even there, some evolution was taught openly. If we do not stand firm on the issue of a literal seven-day creation (as stated in the 28 fundamentals), we will ultimately lose our position on salvation. We are redeemed from a fallen condition not the highest condition we've ever known since we've finally evolved to man. Even theistic evolution (long ages for a day) destroys that belief. Please act swiftly on this issue. Our young people are at stake.

Members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church adhere to 28 Fundamental Beliefs. Number 6 states that we believe in a six-day literal creation. I understand the very real need for students from the elementary level through college to understand the beliefs of both creation and evolution. However, for a Seventh-day Adventist entity to teach that both creation and evolution are viable options of belief goes against those Fundamental Beliefs and, even more importantly, goes directly against the Bible. My prayer is that the leaders of LSU and the Church will take immediate action to correct this ill-advised decision.

I understand that Evolution is the desired explanation for the existance of life in scientific circles. It is therefore a necessary evil. But for an Adventist school professor to openly advocate evolution as the only answer to man's origins is absolutely intolerable. He is being paid with church money. In any other branch of our church, to preach against any of fundamental doctrines of our church would not be tolerated. Why are we tolerating this? Is the doctrine of creation that unimportant. Is it not one of the foundations for all of our doctrines? As goes creation so goes the sabbath, origin of sin, the atonement of Christ, etc. A seventh-day adventist school should promote biblical truth. Please fix this!!
